The Unfair Impact of Tennessee's ABC Board Family Employment Restriction on Small Businesses

As a small business owner in Tennessee, I’ve seen firsthand how outdated regulations are holding back local businesses that want to thrive. One of the most frustrating barriers is the current law that prohibits a business from obtaining a liquor license if the owner has a family member working any where for the ABC board, from secretaries to Janitors and anywhere in between. This law, which dates back years, unfairly limits opportunities for small businesses like mine to grow and compete on a level playing field with large chains.

The ability to serve alcohol is essential for restaurants and bars. It’s not just a source of revenue—it’s part of the dining experience. Without the ability to offer alcohol, small businesses lose out on significant sales and the chance to provide a complete service that customers expect. Large chains, with more resources, can bypass these limitations and continue to offer alcohol, leaving local businesses like mine at a competitive disadvantage.

This outdated law benefits big businesses that can afford to work around the regulation, while small, local restaurants are stuck. For many of us, securing a liquor license could be the difference between staying open and closing our doors. It’s time for this law to be updated. The world has changed, and so should the rules. Let’s give local businesses a fair chance to succeed by removing this barrier and leveling the playing field.

It’s time to modernize Tennessee’s liquor laws and support the small businesses that form the heart of our communities. Let’s make the change we need—now.  PLEASE spread the word!
